Club Spotlight: RESIST

RESIST is a club that is about spreading awareness about drugs and alcohol to help prevent abuse and addiction. It was originally started in 1995 by Julie Sanchez as “BOND,” which stood for “Building Our Nation Drug Free.” Then later on the club was named “TATU, Teens Against Tobacco Use.” Eventually, Mrs. Herner made the official name to “RESIST: Redmen Educating Students on Illegal Substance Temptations.” Mrs. Gallagher has been the advisor of this club for 8 years.

According to Mrs. Gallagher, “The main goal for this club is for students to learn how to become leaders and the importance of not only spreading awareness of drugs and alcohol in our community, but also how to get help.” There are no requirements to join this club and there are roughly 100 students who are a member this year. RESIST club officers include President Hudson Moyer, Vice President Courtney Fox, and Club Officers Hailey Cruz, Katelyn Adkins, Sara Veith, Harlee Plummer, Ella Foos, Caleb Montgomery, Kylia Cooper, Kylie Whittier, Kiara Mahon, Addyson Myers, Morgan Ray, Brooke Brown, Destiny Prenatt, Emmy Eaton, and Madison Cody.

RESIST club members participate in numerous events throughout the year. The RESIST club participates in many events, like Key Club’s Halloween Happening, which is a trick or treating event that involves games, candy and of course information about the dangers of drugs. Members also volunteers at Spooktacular which is a drug free community event at Terra Community College where children can trick or treat and participate in fun activities. Drug awareness information is also handed out at the event. This event is put on by the Sandusky County Health Department. RESIST members also participated in a Teen Leadership Training put on by the Sandusky County Health Department.

The RESIST club is also in charge of Red Ribbon Week. The members of this club participate in this national event by putting drug facts on candy and passing them out to students, creating bathroom stall reads, dress up themes for the week, gift card giveaways, and giving students a daily drug fact/information on the announcement each day. All of these events and activities are very important for this club because it’s a way to help spread awareness about the effects of using and abusing drugs and alcohol.

RESIST club members are currently are currently filming 3 prevention PSAs (public service announcement) informing the community about the dangers of vaping, how big tobacco targets teens, and how to get help if already using. The PSA competition is organized by the Sandusky County Health Department. Now for alcohol awareness, RESIST members do the same thing they do for drug awareness, but instead of drug facts they do alcohol facts. This normally occurs the week before prom.

Courtney Fox shared, “I joined because there were a lot of people that were doing it and there was a lot of information given to me as a freshmen about what the club was about. I thought it was important to express the concern about drugs and alcohol and show facts about what they can do to the body, and also helping to show people to stop drugs and at least limit alcohol and to basically be smart with your decisions in the future.” New and interested members are able to join in the fall; membership is open to all students at BHS who want to help spread drug and alcohol awareness.

Staff Spotlight: Coach Cameron Szmik

The boys varsity track team is lucky to have our new throwing Coach Cameron Szmik. Graduating in 2008, Coach Szmik was on the track team his Sophomore, Junior, and Senior years. He started coaching last year at the beginning of track season and has been making an impact on the athletes’ lives ever since.

Coach Szmik shared he wanted to coach because, “I had a lot of coaches going through different sports that have all taught me different lessons and left positive impacts on my life, so when Coach Lilli contacted me about the position, I thought it would be a good way to give back.” Coach Szmik has put countless hours into making sure that his athletes are able to throw to the best of their ability. He says that two of the hardest things about being a throwing coach are keeping the athletes on track during practice and time management. Coach Szmik explains that his biggest motivation to come to practice everyday is knowing that everyday the throwers are getting better and working towards perfectingt their craft. He states that throwing is not a very natural movement and is very technical, which makes the sport unique and coaching it even more unique.

One of the things that he enjoys the most is watching the athletes continuously get better throughout the season. In addition to throwing, Coach Szmik tries to instill respect for others and the sense of being part of a team, even though throwing is a solo sport to his athletes.

When Coach Szmik is not coaching, he enjoys spending time with his family, and his job as a Process Engineer for an injection molding company. If you see Coach Szmik around, make sure to say hello!
