February is upon us which hopefully means spring is around the corner. As we enter the doldrums of winter, we are thankful to have BHS student excitement filling the air.

First and foremost…a big congratulations to our cheerleaders and advisor, Mrs. Ellen Blum! Last Saturday they participated in their regional competition and with their outstanding performance, they qualified for state! The state competition will take place on Sunday, March 3rd at St. John Arena on the campus of The Ohio State University. On February 16th, the cheer squad will be at Genoa High School for the “Cheer for a Cure” and on February 17th they will be at Ashland High School for their annual competition. Best of luck girls!

On Wednesday, BHS received a call from a gentlemen who used to live in Bellevue as a child (1948-52ish). His name was George Irish. Recently, he was at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut to meet with the mayor of that community to offer support that his company provides. While walking the halls with the mayor at Sandy Hook he saw the banner and picture BHS sent Sandy Hook Elementary School in December. He took a picture and wanted to share his moment of pride and reconnection to Bellevue. He said there are over 140,000 pieces of mail throughout the school and ours happened to stick out to him – unbelievably awesome! The first picture below is the school picture we took with the banner. We sent this picture and the banner to Sandy Hook. The second picture is the one that Mr. Irish saw at Sandy Hook and sent to BHS. We are very proud that our positive thoughts and messages were well-received!

A special shout out (S/O) to our Academic Challenge team (Quiz Bowl) and advisor, Mr. Dave Bowers! Last week they garnered a huge win against Norwalk and Sandusky at the Firelands Challenge. Today, they had a very solid showing at the NOL tournament (picture below). Overall, they just missed the playoffs but finished 6th out of 18 teams in the Firelands Challenge competition. All in all the “Fighting Brains” definitely had a great season!

On January 26th the first dodgeball tourney took place at BHS. Key Club and RESIST teamed up to successfully host the event for the charity, Pennies for Patients. A special S/O to Madison Scagnetti for her hard work organizing the event. Our Key Club adivsor is Mrs. Sue Eastman and our RESIST advisor is Ms. Nikole Chaffee. A job well done for all those that were involved. Congrats to the winners pictured below.

On Wednesday evening we held our Freshmen Orientation program at BHS. This event welcomed current 8th grade students and their parents to BHS for an informational session about the transition to high school. The meeting was well-attended and helped ease the natural anxieties about transitioning to high school. Our school counselors worked diligently to prepare and delivery a simplified program that was well-received. A special thanks to them and the staff members who were able to attend and promote their courses and clubs. Anyone who missed the program or has questions should contact the BHS Guidance Office for more information, 419.484.5071. We are looking forward to seeing the Class of 2017 this August!

This past Saturday our wrestlers hosted the NOL tournament at BHS. We had a very strong showing and ended up finishing in 4th place. Our placers in the top three were; Grant Moyer (1st), Collin Adkins (2nd), Ryan Veliz (2nd), Jared Hoy (3rd), Zack Miller (3rd) and Chris Harris (3rd). The grapplers are back on the mats tonight vs. Sandusky and Oak Harbor then they travel to BGSU on February 15th, 16th for their sectional tournament.

Our girls basketball team moved to 17-2 on the year by picking up another quality victory on Tuesday night vs. Perkins. Senior Hilary Brown had a hit a jumper near the buzzer to give the Lady Red the 62-60 victory. Tomorrow, the Lady Red travel to Shelby for a chance to win the NOL title for the 3rd year in a row. The Whippets are also playing for a shot at the title so the match up will be filled with a lot of energy and excitement!

Our boys basketball team has overcome a lot of adversity this year and currently sit at 9-8 on the year. They travel to Norwalk tonight to take on the undefeated Truckers. The positive momentum and early season challenges have positioned the boys to end their season on a great note and make a run in the tournament!

Another FYI reminder – the yearbook staff has teamed with Jostens to introduce a great app for iPhone’s and Android’s – “Replay It”. The app allows anyone to snap a picture and upload it to the BHS yearbook site where our staff can use it for the yearbook. A clever idea! Check it out in the App Store, Google Play or by visiting their website for more information: http://www.replayit.com/r/ReplayIt
