Staff Spotlight: Mr. Strayer

One of the courses offered here at BHS that is favorite amongst students is the Bells program, taught by Mr. Strayer. There is a Bells Beginner course and a Bells Advanced course.

Originally, however, Mr. Strayer wanted to be a math teacher, not a music teacher. He said that at that time, his SAT scores were not high enough for him to attend his school of choice so instead he pursued music. He felt that it was something he was good at and he could give back to others through music. In his 34 year career, 33 of which have been at Bellevue, he has certainly given back to his students through music. Mr. Strayer said that he has loved being a teacher as “it has been a rewarding career.” Mr. Strayer shared that his favorite part has been seeing his students enter his class with no skills at all and then growing and learning to play so well throughout the high school career.

When recalling some of these memorable moments, Mr. Strayer said, “I have had many good moments along the way. Some of the more fun moments have been with large groups of students. For example, when we took the high school marching band to play a halftime show along with the Edison High School marching band. I have also taken the various bell groups to Toledo Mud Hens and Walleye games to play the national anthem in front of between 6,000 – 10,000 people. It was nice to represent Bellevue in those activities. The alumni band event last year was also a fun event when former students came back from many generations to perform one more time – music is a lifelong skill that many people can do well into their senior years. Other events such as solo and ensemble are more individualized but easily showcase the progress students have made.”

In conclusion, we are lucky that Mr. Strayer decided to become a music teacher. His passion and positive attitude is definitely an influence on all of his Bells students.
